A Comparative Analysis on the Poverty of Female Householders in Korea
Kim Su-Jeong

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse the poverty of female-headed householders(FHH) in Korea from the comparative perspective, using LIS micro data and KoWePS. In terms of the size and gender ratio of poverty, the situation of Korean FHHs is the worst. The poverty rate of Korean FHH is more than 40% and the gender poverty gap is about 20% point. Secondly, the proportion of FHH under the relative poverty line(50% of median income) is lower than that of male householders, and therefore poverty is not yet feminized in the poor population in Korea. However, FHH are over-represented in the poor (40%) compared to their relatively small population size(18%). Thirdly, in Korea elderly women are more likely to be poor than single mothers. From the comparative analysis, we found that the poverty risk of elderly women is higher not only in familiaristic countries like Korea and Taiwan but in the social democratic countries. The difference between the two are that poverty rate of the latter is very low in general. In contrast, the poverty of single mother is worse in liberal and corporatist countries. Based on these heuristic findings, this study suggests that differences in poverty profiles of women householders among the regimes should be explained in detail.
